I’ve begun to realize that I am kind of a sucker for proposals. No, seriously. Between the romance of it and the adrenaline rush of keeping it all a secret (just picture me hiding behind trees or pretending to photograph birds—-it’s laughable), being a surprise proposal photographer in Southern California is really just a blast and always so memorable. So when Tiancheng reached out about surprising his partner Jiawei with a proposal on their anniversary, there was absolutely no way I could say no. Since we had just a short amount of time to plan, we worked out all the details via emails, texts, and even some funny diagrams with stick figures that I drew up to show him which direction to stand when he popped the question.
On the day of the surprise proposal, the weather in Malibu was absolutely perfect and consequently drew quite a crowd where we had originally planned for Tiancheng to propose to Jiawei. Fortunately, we had a back up plan handy and made use of that instead (fun fact: I always have back up plans for pretty much everything). When they arrived at the beach, it wasn’t long before they started heading down the beach, unbeknownst to Jiawei, right towards me. Of course, I was pretending to take photos of some random photos and then of the ocean and landscape around us and just kept watching as they go closer and closer. Soon enough, they stopped almost right in front of me and then Tiancheng dropped down on one knee and pulled out a gorgeous ring to present to Jiawei. They some time in that moment, Jiawei shocked and taking it all in—-it was a beautiful moment. Once she said yes, I ran over to congratulate them and start grabbing some photos of their newly engaged selves! We played on the beach as the sun began to sink lower and lower into the horizon, lighting up the coast line in front of us.
When the sun had reached its final moments of setting, we found ourselves up on the bluffs, taking in all that gorgeous sunset had to offer. Climbing rocks, snuggling up in a nook of wildflowers, and looking out at the blue ocean, Jiawei and Tiancheng made every moment count and were totally wrapped up in each other even as we made our final descent back to the parking lot. It was the most perfect surprise proposal in Malibu and I feel so honored to have been the one to document it. Check out some photos from their gallery and congrats again T + J!
